You put your mother, your father, your grandparent in a nursing home because you trusted that they would be cared for. When that trust is violated — when your loved one is neglected, abused, or harmed by the people who were supposed to protect them — it’s one of the most devastating things a family can experience.
Signs of abuse or neglect to watch for: unexplained bruises, cuts, or fractures; sudden weight loss or dehydration; bedsores (pressure ulcers), especially in advanced stages; poor hygiene, soiled bedding, or unchanged clothing; emotional withdrawal, fear, or agitation around certain staff; medication errors or overmedication (chemical restraint); infections from unsanitary conditions; and unexplained financial transactions on the resident’s accounts.
Missouri law provides legal remedies for families when nursing home residents are harmed. The facility has a legal duty to provide adequate care, staffing, and supervision. When they cut corners — and understaffing is the root cause of most nursing home neglect — they are liable for the harm that results.
If you suspect your loved one is being abused or neglected, document everything you observe, report your concerns to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and call an attorney. When you’re hurt, call Kurt. (417) 553-4898. Free consultation.
